Frequently Asked Questions
Is my dog too young for class?
Puppies should begin learning the instant you bring them into your home. But we welcome puppies in our puppy class as young as 8 weeks with proof of vaccinations.
Is my dog too old to learn how to behave?
It is a common misconception that an old dog can not learn new tricks. A dog learns new things daily. They are never too old to learn!
What should I bring to class?
The dog, a proper leash and collar, special treats, proof of vaccinations, and a sense of humour.
What type of collar should I use?
We actually discuss this in class. It is hard for us to say without seeing the dog and handler. Bring what you have been using and we will discuss options.
What type of leash?
Preferrably a 3-6 foot nylon or leather leash. No chain leashes or retractable leashes, no tie outs.
How long do classes last?
Classes run for 6 weeks sessions, unless specified differently. An average class runs for 50 minutes to an hour.
Do I bring my dog the first night of class?
YES
What happens if I can not make a class or I miss a class?
I previously arranged with the instructor we will do everything we can to help you out and get the info you need. To get you the class notes, to arrange for you to attend another class, or meet with you briefly at another time. No refunds are given for missed classes.
My dog is scheduled to be spayed or neutered during the scheduled session what do I do?
Dogs usually recover very quickly from these surgeries. If the surgery took place more than 48 before the next class come to class. If the dog is really under the weather, than please feel free to attend class without your dog and watch.
I just adopted a dog from a shelter/rescue. When should I begin obedience classes?
Right away. Obedience classes help you establish a bond with your new companion as well as give you a way to communicate. The sooner you build this relationship the better. And even an adopted dog who has had some training will benefit from taking an obedience class with their new family.
I don't want to compete with my dog, I just want a well mannered companion, does Taking the Lead have anything for me?
YES! We have many people in our club who don't compete with their dog, they just like to spend quality time with their dog. All dogs (not to mention people's) lives are improved by learning. The dogs and humans at Taking the Lead all look forward to their time they spend training. Its fun and you get to hang out with other people who love the same thing as you... DOGS!
Do you board my dog and train it for me?
No - for most people and most situations, this option makes very little sense.
If you and your family do not learn the requisite skills, any progress your dog makes on training or behavior issues while away will quickly be lost. Particularly for behavior issues, the learning is not likely to transfer. Training is a gradual process which depends on consistency, repetition, and incremental improvement. You must learn the skills needed to shape your dog's behavior, and be prepared to apply them yourself.
If we train your dog; he listens and responds to us, ask yourself, what good will this do when we do not live with you?
